"Freedom is not free to do anything"
The highlight of July is the celebration of the nation's day of Independence. In July 4th 1776, fifty men signed a document written by Thomas Jefferson declaring America's freedom from the oppressive rule of England.
Freedom has always been the battle cry of this country for over 200 years. Unfortunately today, many have much different ideas as to what this freedom is, than did the founding fathers. Many in society today have no clear idea as to what freedom is. Many think that freedom means they are free to do whatever they want. Millions of babies are killed each year and they call it freedom of choice. Pornography fills the TV screens, magazine racks, movie screens and they call it freedom of speech. Cults are formed; satan is worshipped and they call it freedom of religion.
They believe freedom is to do drugs, have sex outside marriage, kids are free to do whatever they want to do in school; others think they can do anything behind closed doors because no one will see or whatever it takes to go ahead. The things that are supposed to be evidence of freedom have in reality enslaved them into addiction. Kids have a wrong idea of freedom not to go to school, leave school anytime and eventually end up delinquents, becoming a menace to society. To many, their pursuit of freedom resulted even to greater slavery.
But two thousand years ago, a man came to set us free. He came to preach the message of freedom not to do anything you want but to do what is right. It is a message of good news for the poor, freedom for the prisoners, sight for the blind and of release for the oppressed. It is still the message needed today because too many are still not free.
Are you free? You can be free. Jesus will set you free because He paid the price of freedom, His own blood that was shed in Calvary. Jesus is the author of freedom, and in Him you can have freedom from sin and death, freedom from worry, freedom from fear, and freedom from hopelessness. You can have freedom when Jesus Christ is in you because He will set you free. Therefore if the Son makes you free, you shall be free indeed (John 8:36).
